Lenny Rush teases Dobby in HBO’s Harry Potter season 2
What will Dobby look like in HBO’s Harry Potter series? Lenny Rush, who plays the house-elf in season 2, is keeping it under wraps. But he promises fans won’t be disappointed: “Dobby’s gonna look great.”
Rush is excited
The 17-year-old actor talked about the role in an interview with The Big Issue, BANG Showbiz reports. He wouldn’t reveal how Dobby is being created: “Oh no! Sorry, I can’t.”
He did say he’s happy with the result. “Dobby’s gonna look great. I’m really pleased with him,” Rush said. And: “What I will say is that I’m so excited.”
He hasn’t seen any more of the series than the rest of us. “The only stuff I’ve seen is what everyone else has seen,” Rush said, referring to the trailers.
Dobby joins Harry Potter season 2
HBO announced in early September that Rush would play Dobby. Billy Barratt was cast as the young Tom Riddle at the same time, and Bonnie Hill takes over the role of Ginny Weasley from Gracie Cochrane.
Season 2 adapts Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. The first season, based on Philosopher’s Stone, premieres at Christmas 2026 on HBO Max.
Rush is no newcomer. In 2023, at just 14, he won a BAFTA for his role in the comedy Am I Being Unreasonable?. In the films, Dobby was voiced by Toby Jones.

From the films to HBO
Dobby has always been tricky to put on screen. In 2002, Chamber of Secrets turned him into a fully digital character, with Toby Jones providing the voice. It was a big step for visual effects at the time.
For the series, MuggleNet reports that Dobby will again be a digital creation, with Rush credited as a performer rather than just a voice. HBO hasn’t said how his work will end up on screen.
That could mean performance capture, reference work on set, voice work, or a mix. Rush clearly can’t tell us yet. But his “I’m really pleased with him” suggests the team is confident about what fans will see.
