Lucius Malfoy actor reveals Harry Potter season 1 runtime

How long is season 1 of HBO’s Harry Potter series? According to Johnny Flynn, who plays Lucius Malfoy, fans are getting around ten hours of Harry Potter and the  Philosopher’s Stone. That’s four times the length of the 2001 film. HBO has not confirmed the figure yet.

Ten hours at Hogwarts

Johnny Flynn said at the London Film Festival that the first season runs about ten hours in total, Collider reports. The actor was speaking to Deadline.

Earlier reports said season 1 has eight episodes. Many fans therefore expected eight episodes of roughly an hour each.

If the eight-episode count holds, the average episode would run about 75 minutes. It’s also possible that one episode, such as the premiere or the finale, is much longer than the rest.

Not confirmed by HBO

Worth keeping in mind: Flynn is an actor, not an HBO spokesperson. The ten-hour runtime is not official yet. Screen Rant also points out that HBO has not confirmed the length.

What we do know: the series premieres at Christmas 2026 on HBO Max. HBO announced this earlier, together with the first official trailer.

Season 1 adapts Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Each following season is set to cover one book.

Johnny Flynn has previously revealed a surprising new interpretation of Lucius Malfoy in HBO’s Harry Potter series. Check it out in this video:

Room for Lucius Malfoy

Flynn’s own role says something about how HBO may use those ten hours. Lucius Malfoy doesn’t actually appear in Philosopher’s Stone. In the book, he’s only mentioned by Draco.

Yet Flynn has already filmed scenes for season 1. That suggests the series is adding material that isn’t in the first book, giving Lucius a presence long before his big entrance.

In the books, Lucius only steps into the story in Chamber of Secrets, where he slips Tom Riddle’s diary into Ginny’s cauldron. Setting him up early could make that moment hit harder.

It also explains part of the extra runtime. Ten hours leaves space for the book’s scenes and for new ones about the wizarding world outside Hogwarts.
